It’s currently characterized for having luxury resorts, an active nightlife and unique activities. But beyond all that, Los Cabos is also full of history, culture and tradition.
The rocks that identify Los Cabos are granite formations with more than 30 million years old. They are known as “Land’s End”, since they mark exactly where the earth ends and where the sea begins. When the Spanish arrived to colonize Mexico, there where only 3 tribes who enjoyed the wonders of Los Cabos: The Pericúes, the Guayacaras and the Cochimes.
These tribes used to fish, shipwreck and create their lives in this wonderful place, but unfortunately after the conquest, their culture died out at the end of the 18th century. Part of its history is known through ancient writings and records left by the Spanish.
Within the history of Los Cabos, it is known that the person who was the first to discover the Baja California Peninsula was the Spanish pilot Fortún Jiménez. Thinking that it was just an island, they looted to take some riches and pearls, but they never gave the place a name.
It is also known that Hernán Cortés wanted to colonize the Baja California peninsula but was unsuccessful, since he realized that there was no drinking water or cultivation possibilities and he left. He later returned to the place and disembarked in La Paz. That is why Cortés is currently recognized as the discoverer.
Due to all the wealth that existed in Los Cabos, they sent Jesuit missionaries from Spain to establish different missions in that place, in order to protect the lands. This caused many confrontations between the natives and the colonizers. Currently there are still historical sites that can be visited by tourists and thus, be able to appreciate their culture and history. One of the most important historical sites in Cabo San Lucas is “Mission San José del Cabo”.
Through the years, Los Cabos has been an emblematic place surrounded by culture, natural wealth and full of historical sites. Previously, very few people could reach Los Cabos, but since the opening of the mainland highway and especially due to sport fishing, over time, all this led to its population increasing constantly and today it is the great tourist destination that we all know.
